In my private psychotherapy practice, a major focus of my work with young women is on cultivating discipline in their lives.
What does discipline have to do with mental health and wellness?
Everything.
Discipline is vital to mental health and mental performance mastery.
It creates stability, which leads to feelings of safety, which regulates the nervous system, which enhances a sense of well-being.
But this is only a part of why discipline is so vital for mental mastery and health.
When you practice discipline in your life, it means you consistently show up for yourself.
It means when you say you are going to do something, you do it, with very few exceptions.
Instead of promises, you make commitments.
Instead of hopes, you make plans.
Instead of saying words, you take actions.
Over time, the daily practice of discipline helps to build trust in yourself.
Trust in yourself, over time, leads to the development of confidence.
Confidence builds belief in your ability to do hard things.
When you have trust in yourself, confidence in your abilities , and belief in your ultimate power, your life will transform in a variety of ways.
Listening to your intuition…will become seamless.
Following your gut instincts…will become habit.
Saying no to unhealthy people and behaviors….will be less stressful.
You will no longer betray yourself to meet the needs of others.
So.
What is practicing discipline?
It’s going to bed at a time that will allow you to get the rest your body needs to function optimally… even if you don’t want to.
It’s nourishing your body with the fuel that supports your body’s overall functioning… even if other options taste better.
It’s consistently moving your body and challenging your muscles and cardiovascular system in a regular way… even if its hard to do.
It’s saying no to requests you are not able to accommodate….even if it incites others' disappointment.
It’s carefully selecting what thoughts you focus on and what thoughts you let go of….even when they all feel true.
It’s prioritizing the daily habits that keep your body, mind, and spirit functioning optimally…again, and again, and again…. every single day.
In time, and with consistency, you begin to learn that YOU CAN TRUST YOURSELF TO DO HARD THINGS.
This belief in yourself will get you through the many life challenges that come your way.
