Locus of Control

Who holds the power in your life?
Is it everyone around you? Or you, yourself?
Is it external circumstances outside your control? Or is it how you choose to respond to those circumstances ?
Does society dictate how you think, what you believe, and who you are? Or do you get to decide what fits with your own personal truth?
Do you say to yourself “I can’t” or do you say to yourself, “I will figure out how”?
When hardship strikes, do you wonder “Why does life just suck for me” or do you tell yourself “I will figure out a way through this”?
If you have a bad day, do you lash out at those around you in stress and anger, or do you focus on shifting your mindset to better manage your emotions?
Locus of control.
It all comes down to where you believe your power resides.
I’ve been a trauma therapist for almost 18 years and I can tell you this with absolute and unequivocal certainty: Your life is never going to be what you want it to be if you assume no authority over it.
There will always be an external, extraneous circumstance that swoops in to thwart your efforts ... There will always be someone or something to blame...Your confidence in yourself will not grow.... if you believe good things only come by chance, luck, or pity.
Change comes about by recognizing where your power truly lies........ and then harnessing it with all the fierceness you can muster.
Struggling to reach your goals can often times be a function of locus of control.
Therapy can help shift this in a way that leads to empowerment, enhanced personal agency, and strong self-efficacy.
Therapy can help train your brain to scan for where your power is and where it is not so you can better utilize your time and energy.
Therapy can help shift your beliefs about yourself, other people, and the world in such a way so as to allow you to harness the power you do have in your life.
It is true that in life there are many things outside our control.
Bad things do happen.
We sometimes are victims.
Events can absolutely be unfair.
There are many aspects of this world we are helpless to change.
So why waste bandwidth on those things?
Put your time and energy into what you can control.
Therapy can help you learn how.
